Noosa s. r. o. makes Bonasea. This page is the plain version: where the name comes from, what the app does not do, and what happens to your position while you are navigating.
The name
A flat, windless sea
Bonaca is the Croatian and Italian word for a flat, windless sea — the state every motorboat skipper is looking for. It is the morning when the channel is a mirror, the crew is quiet and the coffee stays in the cup. We named the app after the day it exists to find.
Bonasea is built by boaters, for boaters. We wanted the answer for ourselves first: not one more forecast to interpret at the kitchen table, but a straight answer about which day, and which hour, to go.

What Bonasea does not do
Three things you should hear from us rather than find out on the water.
It does not replace official charts
Bonasea is a planning and decision-support aid. Keep your official charts and publications on board, and keep using your own judgement. The map is built from open data: a planning aid, not an official nautical chart.
Sailboats are not supported yet
The comfort model is built around planing and semi-planing motorboats. There are no polars, no wind-based routing and no heel comfort. Sailing is on the roadmap, and until it arrives we would rather say so than sell you the wrong app.
Depths are modelled, not surveyed
The depth on the chart is a model of the sea floor, not a survey of your bay. Between the soundings it fills the gaps, so a rock the survey missed is missing here too and a bay can look emptier than it is. Trust your echo sounder over the app.
Data and privacy
Your position stays yours
The short version. The privacy policy is the long one, and it says the same thing.
- Our own servers in the European Union, with daily backups.
- Your GPS position is sent to the server only while you are navigating, so the sea state at the boat’s position can be computed.
- No position history is kept on the server. This applies wherever you are, including outside the EU.
- Privacy-friendly analytics without cookies, which is why there is no consent banner to click away.
